IMPACT OF PARENTAL EDUCATIONAL LEVEL AND OCCUPATION STATUS ON READING COMPREHENSION OF 4TH GRADE STUDENTS IN AZERBAIJAN

Abstract. The paper examines the influence of socio-economic factors, specifically parental education and occupation, on the reading comprehension abilities of 4th grade students in Azerbaijan using data from the PIRLS 2016 study. Two indicators of socio-economic status of families have been taken into consideration: (i) education background of parents (ii) occupational status of parents. The analysis suggests that both parental education and occupation significantly affect a child’s reading comprehension skills. Particularly, the study finds that higher levels of education and occupational status of fathers are strongly associated with better reading achievement among 4th-grade students.

Keywords: socio-economic status, reading and occupation of parents, reading comprehension, PIRLS, Azerbaijan.
